Assess an individual student’s attempt
- Navigate to the Quizzes tool.
- Select Grade from the quiz’s menu with student attempts.
- Click on the student’s attempt link that you want to grade.
- The student’s quiz attempt is displayed including question data, the student's responses, and the correct answers.
- You can provide overall quiz feedback in the Attempt Feedback field.
- You can enter individual question feedback in the Feedback field beneath each question.
- When finished entering feedback and scoring the attempt, do one of the following:
- Publish – To make the attempt score and feedback available to a student.
- Click Save Draft – To save your changes in draft mode, the student will not be able to access changes to their quiz attempt score and feedback.
Assess all student responses to an individual question
While grading attempts at a quiz, navigate to the Questions tab to view quiz responses by question. There are two options available to review question responses: Grade Individual Responses and Update All Attempts.
Grade Individual Responses
Grade Individual Responses option enables you to grade a quiz one question at a time for all students who responded to the question. This means you can grade and leave feedback for each student’s response to the individual question.
Assess student responses using “hide learners’ names”
- Navigate to the Quizzes tool.
- From the quiz’s menu, select Grade.
- Select the Hide learners’ names checkbox.
- Click on the question link you want to grade.

- Enter a revised score in the Score field for the attempt.
Note: Each student’s name is replaced with ‘attempt <number>” to make it anonymous.
- When finished, remember to click Save and Continue to navigate to the next student’s response.
- When finished, click Go Back to Questions to be taken back to the grading page.
- Repeat steps 4 through 9 for any other questions you want to grade, or navigate back to the Quizzes page.
Update All Attempts
Update All Attempts enables you to view question statistics, make grading changes, and leave feedback for all responses to the selected question. There are options to modify the grade for all responses to the current question.
How can I assess an edited or deleted question after students already took a quiz?
If at least one student has taken the quiz and a question was edited or deleted, then the students’ quiz attempts scores would need to be updated using the following steps.
- Navigate to the Quizzes tool.
- From the quiz’s menu, select Grade.
- Select the Update All Attempts radio button.
- Under the Questions that are not in the quiz anymore section, the edited or deleted questions are listed here for review.
- Click on a question link to view the students’ collection responses to the question.

- Select one of the Grading Type options:
- Give to all attempts – This option provides all students who answered the question the specified points.
- Give to attempts with the following selection – This option ensures that only student who answered the question correctly would receive the specified points.
- Enter the number of Points.
- When finished, click Save.
- Click Yes in the confirmation window.
- Click Go Back to Questions.
- Repeat steps 5 through 9 for each question under the Questions that are not in the quiz anymore heading.
- Students who have completed the quiz with the questions will have the updated scores.
