Create a Survey in D2L Brightspace

Create a survey that displays student names with results

  1. Navigate to the Surveys tool.
  2. Click New Survey.
  3. Enter the Name of your survey.
  4. Important: Do not toggle make results anonymous.
  5. In the Survey Questions area, click Add/Edit Questions. Once finished adding questions, click Done Editing Questions.
  6. Navigate to the Restrictions tab.
  7. Unselect the status to Hide from users.
  8. Select a start and end date with ‘display in calendar’ checkbox. 
  9. Set the number of Attempts Attempted.
  10. Click Save and Close.

Once you've created a survey, you can further customize it by adjusting the survey properties, adding date restrictions and release conditions, limiting the number of attempts, associating learning objectives, and creating reports. For additional instructions, review the sections below.

Create an anonymous survey

  1. Navigate to the Surveys tool.
  2. Click New Survey.
  3. Enter the Name of your survey.
  4. In the Survey Questions area, click Add/Edit Questions. Once finished adding questions, click Done Editing Questions.
  5. Select the Make results anonymous checkbox.
  6. Navigate to the Restrictions tab.
  7. Unselect the status to Hide from users.
  8. Select a start and end date with ‘display in calendar’ checkbox. 
  9. Set the number of Attempts Attempted.
  10. Click Save and Close.

Survey reports and statistics

Use survey reports to gather information on survey data. Survey reports collect and present more types of information than is available through results. Choose a report type to display question statistics, question details, users statistics, attempt details, or user attempts. You can also select a release date and choose which roles have permission to view each report.

Create a report

  1. Navigate to the Surveys tool.
  2. Select Edit from the survey’s menu.
  3. On the Reports Setup tab, click Add Report.
  4. Enter a Report Name.
  5. Select a Report Type: summary report or individual attempts.  
  6. You can choose to immediately release a report after a survey submission, or enter an alternative date and time.
  7. In the Release Report To section, select the checkbox beside every role that you want to release the report to. Remember to select your Instructor role!
  8. Click Save.
  9. Click Save and Close.

Review reports for a survey

You can export survey statistics and reports to a CSV file for data analysis. You must create a report first before you can view or export reports.

  1. Navigate to the Surveys tool.
  2. Select Reports from the survey’s menu.
  3. Click on the report name.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Click Generate HTML to view the report in your browser.
    • Click Generate CSV to open the report as a CSV file on your device.
    • Click Generate Excel to open the report as an Excel file on your device.
  5. Click Done when finished generating the report.

Review statistics for a survey

  1. Navigate to the Surveys tool.
  2. Select Statistics from the survey’s menu.
  3. Search for students and their listed attempt types in the Users tab.
    Note: Based on how you have set up the survey properties, you might get a list of all users or just the overall survey results with anonymous responses.
  4. Click on an individual attempt to view a specific student's results, or click View Overall Results icon at the bottom of the page to view the number of attempts per question within a survey.
