Overview
Within a D2L Brightspace class, instructors may be able to record an audio feedback file or a video feedback file within various places, including Announcements, Assignments (when evaluating), and Discussions. Audio or video feedback can be a useful supplement to written text feedback.
- The length of audio recording is typically up to five (5) minutes per recording.
- The length of video recording is typically up to thirty (30) minutes per recording.
If you use the ‘record audio’ or 'record video' feature within D2L Brightspace, it is highly recommend that you provide a text equivalent of the recording, so the information is accessible to the recipient(s). Machine-captions can be ordered for each recording.
Record Audio and Record Video options
Feedback in Announcements
In the Announcements tool, create or edit an announcement item. Under the Attachments section, click Record Audio or Record Video.
Feedback for Assignment Submissions
In the Assignments tool, access Record Audio or Record Video.:
- Under the Instructions field when creating or editing an assignment folder.

- Under the Overall Feedback field in the evaluation panel when evaluating a student’s assignment submission.

Feedback in Discussion posts
In the Discussions tool, access Record Audio or Record Video when starting a new thread or replying to a post. Expand the Add Attachments link (in the Reading View), or scroll down to the Attachments section (in the Grid View).

Leave feedback as an audio file or video file
- Navigate to one of the following areas in your course:
- Create (or edit) an announcement item
- Start a new thread (or reply to one) in a discussion topic
- View the evaluation page for a student in an assignment
- On the page, click Record Audio or Record Video..
- In the web browser, a prompt may display asking to allow sharing your microphone and/or camera. Select the camera and microphone you’d like to use and click Allow.
- When ready to record, click the New Recording button in the Media Capture window.
- A timer will count up the minutes and seconds for the length of the recording.
Note: There is no pause or editing functions with this feature. A recording can only be started and stopped.
- When finished with the recording, click Stop Recording.
- Upon stopping the recording, you can preview it. Note: To restart the recording, use the New Recording button (repeat steps 4-7).

- When ready to add the recording to the page, click Add.
- On the next screen, enter a title, description, and request captions for the feedback file.
- The title field is valuable to provide a short description of the feedback file for accessibility. By adding a short description, it will make it for students to understand what the feedback will contain. Otherwise, a randomly generated title with alphanumeric characters is provided for the file – which is not helpful to you or your students!
- Machine-generated captions can be ordered for the feedback. Select the spoken language from the audio language field and select the “automatically generate captions from audio” checkbox.
- When ready, click Add.

- The feedback file is now available added to the page as a clickable link.
- To make the feedback file available to the student(s), remember to:
- Click Publish or Update for an announcement item.
- Click Publish when assessing the student’s work in the assignment.
- Click Post for the thread or reply in the discussion topic.
How do students access my audio or video feedback files in my course
Students can access the audio feedback link from an announcement item, from a discussion thread or post, or from the assignment feedback page (after publishing feedback for that student). Learn more in these student articles:
Upon clicking on the feedback link, the file opens in a new browser tab or window, depending on the device. The media player displays with options to play the file and adjust the volume. Additional options – adjust the speed, toggle on/off captions (if available), view transcript (for video feedback only) and download – are listed from the Settings icon.
Can students add audio recording within D2L Brightspace
Similar to instructors, students have access to the ‘record audio’ and 'record video' feature within D2L Brightspace to create short recordings. Learn more about how students create recordings using the ‘record audio’ or 'record video' feature in the student article.
