When are students unenrolled from a D2L Brightspace course
A student will be unenrolled from the D2L Brightspace course if any of these conditions exist:
- The student withdrew from the course in ISRS/eServices.
- The student was dropped for non-payment in ISRS/eServices.
- The student received an “F” grade AND the last date of attendance (LDA) is assigned before the calculated 80% withdrawal date in ISRS/eServices.
(This rule went in to effect as of November 20, 2020 on the recommendation of the Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Technology Council.)
- The student receives a grade other than “F” (such as a FN or W grade) along with the last date of attendance (LDA).
Refer to the unenrollment logic below for additional scenarios.
The LDA enrollment/unenrollment only happens during the next integration run. It is not the grade itself that triggers the unenrollment from the D2L Brightspace course; it is the date in the LDA field in ISRS.
Historical Background
When the ISRS D2L integration process was put into place in 2004, the only letter grade that required an LDA date was the "W" withdrawn grade, so the process was specific to that process. In the recent years, more schools began requiring a Last Date of Attendance to be entered with other letter grades, such as F, FN, or FW. However, it is important to note that the LDA triggers the unenrollment from D2L Brightspace courses, rather than the grade earned. Additionally, there is a not a consistent letter grade convention across all schools.
D2L Brightspace unenrollment logic
As of Thursday, November 19, 2020, a change will be made within ISRS to the unenrollment logic of students from their Brightspace course. This change was visible in D2L Brightspace starting Friday, November 20, 2020.
A student will not be unenrolled from the D2L Brightspace course if:
- The student receives a letter grade of “F” AND the “Last Date of Attendance” (LDA) is assigned with a date after the calculated 80% withdrawal date.

Each institution defines their own letter grade values and can determine which of these letter grades require a last date of attendance (LDA) to be entered by the instructor of record for a class. As affirmed by the registrar’s affinity group the letter value of “F” is used consistently by all institutions, therefore limiting the requested change to only this letter grade provides a narrow change and allows institutions to utilize their existing practices of utilizing their own letter grades and/or assigning LDAs to specific letter grades.
The above change was made as a result of a recommendation of the Learning Environment Committee made to the Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Technology Council, which was approved by the Senior Vice Chancellor of ASA (Ron Anderson).
Student re-enrolled after receiving a LDA for the course
To re-enroll a student in a course who has been unenrolled, clear the grade entry AND the last date of attendance (LDA) from the user’s ISRS/eServices record. The student will be automatically re-enrolled in the D2L Brightspace class in the next integration run.
Students who receive a grade other than “F” without the last date of attendance (LDA) will remain enrolled in the course.
View Class Progress for Unenrolled Students
The ability to view progress for students who have been unenrolled in Brightspace was lost years ago due to a user interface change and tool limitations. We have been asking for that capability to be restored for years, but D2L has indicated it will require a major redesign to the tool. We do not have an ETA for a feature where D2L would restore the ability for faculty to view progress for unenrolled students. In the meantime, learn more in articles related to reviewing an unenrolled student's grades from the Classlist.
