Accommodations feature in D2L Brightspace

Summary

Where is the accommodations feature in D2L Brightspace? How can I accommodate a student to grant alternative time extensions to all quizzes in a course?

Body

Overview

This Accommodations feature enables instructors to grant students accommodations for one or all quizzes in their D2L Brightspace course.  Accommodation options include more time to complete quizzes in the course.

Edit accommodations for a student from the Classlist

Accommodations are set for an individual student from the Classlist tool.

  1. To grant accommodations to a student, navigate to the Classlist tool.
  2. From the student's menu, select Edit Accommodations.
Edit accommodations option from a user's drop-down menu in the Classlist tool
  3. In the new Edit Accommodations dialog, select the options to modify quiz time limits.
    • Modify Time Limit – The additional time can be applied in terms of quiz time multipliers (for example, 1.5x quiz time).
Edit accommodations dialog box provides options to modify the quiz time limit with a multiplier of the original quiz time, or adding extra time.
    • Extra Time – The additional time can be applied in terms of extra time in minutes (for example, an additional 30 minutes).
  4. To save the changes, click Save.
  5. Once granted, these accommodations apply to all quizzes in the Quizzes tool within the course for that student.

How does the quiz time multiplier option work

Accommodations are set from the Classlist, but affect quizzes in the Quizzes tool.

When using the modified time limit, the multiplier of original quiz time provides the student a modified time limit that is rounded up to the nearest whole minute:

  • For example, the original quiz time of 5 minutes with a 1.25 times special accommodation modified time limit rounds up to 7 minutes.
  • As another example, the original quiz time of 10 minutes with a 1.25 times special accommodation modified time limit rounds up to 13 minutes.
Sample table of original time of 5 or 10 minutes times 1.25 equals 7 or 13 minutes when rounded up

When viewing the quiz’s time limit, the original quiz time limit remains set.  However, the student with special accommodation will get an extended time limit based on the modified time limit.

  • The quiz time limit is set to 10 minutes and no special access time limits have been set for individual students.
  • A student without accommodations (nor special access) will get the original quiz time limit when starting and taking the quiz.
  • A student with accommodations (not special access) will get the modified quiz time limit when starting and taking the quiz.

Changing the time allowed on a quiz automatically adjusts the student’s accommodation time for that quiz.  For example, a student has been provided 1.5 times accommodation for quizzes. The quiz time allowed was set to 10 minutes, which automatically gives the student 15 minutes time allowed.  The quiz time allowed is subsequently changed to 20 minutes, which automatically gives the student 30 minutes time allowed for the quiz.

Review existing accommodations from a quiz’s special access screen

Accommodations are not equivalent to Special Access.  Accommodations does not provide alternative quiz dates, quiz late behavior, or other alternative quiz options set using Special Access in quizzes.  However, Accommodations may override existing special access on a quiz-by-quiz basis for the individual student.

Once granted, accommodations apply to all quizzes in the Quizzes tool within the course for that student. The instructor can notice a student has active accommodations set-up when reviewing special access for a quiz.

Quiz-specific special access can overwrite an accommodation for any user on a quiz-by-quiz basis.  When a student already has special access for a quiz and then a student is provided accommodation (via the Classlist tool), the instructor will notice an accommodations icon from the quiz’s Special Access section (via the Edit Quiz screen > Availability & Conditions section > Manage Special Access).  Upon hovering over the icon, it describes the impact the special access has overwriting an accommodation.

An accommodations icon indicates that the student's accommodations has been overriden by the special access for this specific quiz.
