Overview

Use the Learning Outcomes tool to help you assess students’ learning outcomes and determine if they have acquired the intended knowledge, skills, and abilities from a learning experience. Learning Outcomes help track information about the knowledge, skills and abilities students acquire as they participate in courses or other learning experiences. Learning Outcomes are an inventory of skills and knowledge, rather than measures of how good students are at something.

Turn on Learning Outcomes in your course

  1. From the course navbar, click Course Admin.
  2. Click Tools.
  3. For Learning Outcomes, the tool is turned off by default.
  4. For Learning Outcomes, toggle it to on.

  5. Now, you can import learning outcomes into your course.

Import outcomes from the program

  1. From the course navbar, click Course Admin.
  2. Click Learning Outcomes.
  3. From Import Outcomes, select Import from Program.
    Import from Program option fromt he Import Outcomes menu.
  4. Select the program from the Program Outcomes menu.
  5. Select the checkbox next to the outcomes you want to add to your course.
  6. Click Import Select Outcomes.

  7. Now, you can add these outcomes to learning activities in your course discussions, assignments, and quizzes.

Can I add a learning outcome to an activity that contains student submissions?

Yes, you can! Navigate to the student learning activity (discussion, assignment, quiz), edit the activity/item, and attach the learning outcome.

Align an outcome to a discussion topic (student learning activity)

  1. Navigate to the Discussions tool.
  2. From the menu of the topic you want to associate with an outcome, select Edit Topic.
  3. Click the Outcomes button.

  4. Browse or search for the program outcome that applies to your course.
  5. Check the box for the outcome you want to add, and click Save.

  6. Back on the Edit Topic screen, click Save and Close.

Align an outcome to an assignment folder (student learning activity)

  1. Navigate to the Assignments tool.
  2. Find the assignment you want to associate with an outcome, and then click Edit Assignment from the assignment’s menu.
  3. Click the Outcomes button.

  4. Browse or search for the program outcome that applies to your course.
  5. Check the box for the outcome you want to add, and click Save.

  6. Back on the Edit Assignment screen, click Save and Close.

Align an outcome to a set of questions in a quiz (student learning activity)

  1. On the course navbar, click Quizzes.
  2. Find the quiz you want to associate with an outcome, and then click Edit from the quiz menu.
  3. Select the checkbox next to the question or pool of questions you want to add the outcome to.
  4. Click More Actions > Align to Outcomes.
    Select the checkbox next to questions, and then click More Actions > Align to Outcomes.
  5. Browse or search for the program outcome that applies to your course.
  6. Check the box for the outcome you want to add, and click Save.
    Select the checkbox for the outcome, and click Save
  7. Back on the Edit Quiz screen, click Save and Close.

Align an outcome to a rubric

  1. Navigate to the Rubrics tool, such as from the Other Tools menu in the navbar.
  2. Find the rubric you want to associate outcomes to, and then click Edit from the rubric menu.
  3. Click the Outcomes button.

  4. Browse or search for the program outcome that applies to your course.
  5. Check the box for the outcome you want to add, and click Save.
    Select the checkbox for the outcome, and click Save
  6. Back on the Edit Rubric screen, note that the rubric saves automatically. Once the rubric has saved, you may click Close to exit the screen.
