Body
Summary
Courses, user accounts, and enrollments are created within D2L Brightspace through an integration with Minnesota State’s student information system: ISRS (Integrated Statewide Records System). This document details how the integration functions and its expectations.
Frequency
The integration between ISRS and Brightspace runs every 10 minutes. A change that is made within ISRS will be reflected within Brightspace in 10 minutes or less.
Courses
Triggers
A course will be sent from ISRS when it meets one of the following criteria:
- The first instructor assignment or student enrollment occurs
- The course properties are updated
- The course is published by the registrar (ISRS Date Type 0087 has just passed.)
Visibility
Brightspace course creation happens shortly after the course is created in ISRS. However, the course is hidden to allow for changes in scheduling, instructor assignments, and naming. The course will become visible to instructor and students when the institution’s registrar has published the course. Published means that the ISRS Date Type 0087 has passed. If the registrar sets the ISRS Date Type 0087 to the current date, or a date in the past, all courses will remain hidden.
Note: If no ISRS Date Type 0087 date is in place, all courses will be visible upon creation.
Updates
When a course is updated in ISRS, that update is transferred to Brightspace. An update is triggered when one of the following course properties is changed:

Changes to these properties will cause a change to the Brightspace course. Changes to other properties of the course in ISRS do not trigger an update to the Brightspace course.
Cancellation
When a course is cancelled, the Brightspace course section is deleted, including any enrollments (instructor or student). The parent course offering is hidden from instructor or student view in Brightspace. If materials or records need to be retrieved from the cancelled Brightspace course, the instructor should contact their campus Brightspace support.
User Accounts
Triggers
A user account is sent to Brightspace upon three primary triggers:
- The person has been admitted to the school (has a current ST_ADM_STAT record)
- The person has a new employee assignment or instructor assignment
- The person has a new registration, with no other registrations in the past year
Updates
When a user account is updated in ISRS, that update is transferred to Brightspace. An update is triggered when one of the following user properties are changed:
