Assessing LTI & SCORM in Content in D2L Brightspace

Summary

How do I create a grade item for an LTI or SCORM content topic in D2L Brightspace prior to students using the activity?

Body

Summary

When using an External Learning Tool (LTI) or SCORM activity in your course, a grade value can be recorded for the activity.  Often, these activities will create a grade item automatically.  However, the created grade item won't be in a grade book category, and may have a different point value than you would like.  If the activity will be recording grade scores and you'd like to set up the grade item ahead of time, follow these steps.

Steps for Use

  1. Within the LTI or SCORM content topic, scroll to the bottom of the page.
  2. Under 'Assessment', click Add a grade item.
    Add a grade item
  3. If you have an existing grade item, select it from the list.  You're all done!
  4. If you do not have an existing grade item, click the + plus button.
Select or create a grade item
  5. Within the 'New Grade Item' pop-up, fill in the details for your grade item and click Create.

Once a student has completed the activity, the grade for that student will be placed into the selected grade item.

Notes

Some integrations use LTI for launching the activity but use a different method for recording grade values.  As a result, the activity may not honor your grade item selection.

Deleting the LTI or SCORM content item will not remove the grade item association.  It would create an orphan grade item that cannot be deleted without D2L’s assistance.  For this reason, please remove the grade item association from the content topic first, delete the grade item, and then delete the LTI or SCORM content topic.
