Assessing LTI in Content in D2L Brightspace

Summary

How do I create a grade item for an LTI content topic in D2L Brightspace prior to students using the activity?

Body

Summary

When using an External Learning Tool (LTI) activity in your course, a grade value can be recorded for the activity. Often, these activities will create a grade item automatically. However, the created grade item won't be in a grade book category, and may have a different point value than you would like. If the activity will be recording grade scores and you'd like to adjust the grade item ahead of time, follow these steps.

Steps for Use

Create a New Grade Item

  1. Navigate to the LTI activity.
  2. Select Edit Activity.

  3. Under 'Grade Items', select Add and Manage Grade Items

  4. Select the Grade Item option to create a new grade item in the grade book.

  5. A new grade item is created with the name of the LTI content topic and 10 points in the grade book. It is placed at the end of the grade book outside any grade categories (if applicable). Make note of this grade item's name.

Link to Existing Grade Item

After the steps above have been completed, the following steps will allow you to link the LTI content topic to a different grade item.

  1. Navigate to the LTI activity.
  2. Select Edit Activity.

  5. From the In Grade Book menu, select Edit or Link to Existing
From the In Grade Book menu, the "Edit or Link to Existing" and "Reset to Ungraded" options display.
  6. Select Link to an existing grade item and select the preferred grade item.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Select OK.
  9. When finished, select Save and Close.
Note: The original grade item is still present in the grade book. To remove it, continue with the next few steps.
  10. Navigate to the Grades tool.
  11. Select the Manage Grades link on the grades page.
  12. From the More Actions menu, select Delete
  13. Find the original grade item noted in Step 4.
  14. Select the check box next to the grade item to be deleted and select Delete
  15. Select Yes in the confirmation.

Once a student has completed the activity, the grade for that student will be placed into the linked grade item.

Notes

  • Some integrations use LTI for launching the activity but use a different method for recording grade values.  As a result, the activity may not honor your grade item selection.
  • Deleting the LTI content item will not remove the grade item association! It would create an orphan grade item that cannot be deleted without your local Brightspace Campus Site Admin's assistance. For this reason, please remove the grade item association from the content topic first (step 9-10 > select Reset to Ungraded instead), delete the grade item, and then delete the LTI content topic.
