Knewton Alta

Summary

How do I use the Knewton Alta LTI integration within my D2L Brightspace course?

Body

Overview

Knewton Alta allows for an instructor to create a link to Alta from within their D2L Brightspace course Content.

In 2024 the Alta LTI integration was updated to use a newer version (LTI 1.3).  The information below is for the most recent version of this tool.  A school-level configuration establishes the connection between Brightspace and Alta.

Instructions for Use

Retrieve the course LTI link from Knewton Alta

  1. Within your Knewton Alta course, navigate to Settings.
The Alta course page, with a button for 'Settings'
  2. Under LMS Configuration, ensure D2L is selected as the Learning management system.
  3. Then, click on Copy Link, under the Course LTI Link heading.
Alternatively, you can choose to download a course import file to import into your Brightspace course.
The LMS Configuration section of Alta, showing a Copy Link button.

A Brightspace screenshot showing fields for Title and LTI URL.
  5. Expand the context menu for the new LTI link, and click Hide from Users.
(This will hide the link from students, as the course-level link is only available for use by instructors.)
  6. Click the newly created LTI link to pair the Brightspace section with the Alta course.

Create an assignment link

  1. After pairing your course above, ensure that you have created assignments within Alta.
  2. Navigate to the assignment, open the menu, and click Copy LTI link.
The Alta assignment menu, showing 'Copy LTI link'
  3. Navigate back to your Brightspace course, into the Content tool.
  4. Click Existing Activities > External Learning Tools.
  5. At the bottom of the modal window, click Create New LTI Link.
  6. Enter in a Title, Url, and click Create and Insert.
A Brightspace screenshot showing fields for Title and LTI URL.
  7. Click the newly created LTI link.

Grade Synchronization

Knewton Alta will send grade values back to the D2L Brightspace gradebook automatically after a student has completed the assignment.

If a grade has not transferred:

  1. Check that the student completed 100% of the assignment or the due date in Alta has passed.
  2. Confirm that a grade item has been associated with the External Learning Tool link in Brightspace (view Assessing LTI & SCORM.)
    1. If a grade item was not created, but the student has already taken the assignment, either:
      1. Have the student relaunch the assignment External Learning Tool link, or
      2. Request Alta Support to synchronize all grade scores.
