Review a student's Quiz attempt event log in a D2L Brightspace course

Summary

How can I review the event logs for a student who has taken an attempt at a quiz in my D2L Brightspace course?

Body

Overview

Instructors can review the event log for a student's submitted or in-progress quiz attempt in Quizzes. The event log provides some details about the student's attempt, such as to allow instructors to determine if a student experienced an issue with their Internet connection or re-entered the quiz attempt.

View the event log of a single quiz attempt

You can view an event log of a single quiz attempt made by an individual student.

  1. Navigate to the Quizzes tool.
  2. Select Grade from the quiz's menu.
  3. Find the student's attempt in the list.
  4. Select the attempt to navigate to the evaluation page.
  5. In the right panel, select the 'Evaluation Options' three-dot menu and select Quizzes Event Log
The Quizzes Event Log option from the three-dot 'Evaluation Options' menu
  6. The event log of the quiz attempt displays.

Details from the quiz attempt Event Log

When accessing the quiz attempt Event Log, various details display about the student's quiz attempt.

Details include: (1) the date and time the student took the quiz, (2) the number of attempts they took, (3) the number of quiz entries, (4) the number of Brightspace sessions the student had while taking the quiz, (5) the events logged with the time stamps, (6) an option to show session ID, and (7) an option to show IP address.

Notes:

  • Each time a response is saved, it is included in the quiz attempt Event Log. If a response is saved, then a different response for that same question is selected, the new response is saved with its own time stamp and line in the event log.
  • For Written Response question types, the number of characters saved is included in the log.
  • If a student did not respond to any quiz questions, the quiz event log will not record any saved entries.

Quiz Entry

  • The exact time the student entered the quiz by selecting the Start Quiz button.
  • After a student exited an in-progress quiz attempt, then the exact time the student re-entered the quiz by selecting the Continue Quiz button.
Note: If there are multiple quiz entry logs in the Event Log, this usually indicates that the student navigated to a different tool, exited the course, and/or closed the browser, and then returned to the quiz by selecting the Continue Quiz button. Generally, this could indicate that the student has had technical issues and may have switched browsers in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Response to Question # Saved

To check whether or not the system has saved responses to a question:

  • If a saved message is listed, such as Page 1 Saved, you can review the student's specific response for questions by viewing them on the Grade Attempt page.
  • If you do not have a saved message listed, then the student did not respond to the question.

Page # Saved

The exact time the student selected Next Page or Previous Page buttons (if the quiz is set to multiple pages), or selected Go to Submit Quiz (automatically saves responses to questions on all quiz pages).

Note: When a page is saved, any student answers on the page are saved at the same time.

Internet connection restored

If the Internet connection is dropped while taking the quiz attempt, the quiz event log will include the time when the Internet connection was restored, and the events are logged after the connection is restored.

Important: The quiz event log does not log when an Internet connect is dropped or disconnected, it only logs when the Internet connection is reconnected while taking the quiz.

Quiz Time Limit (# minutes) Exceeded

The student has exceeded the set Time Limit for the quiz. The number of minutes listed is the time limit.

Quiz Submission Confirmation Screen

After the student selects the Go to Submit Quiz button, the student is taken to this confirmation page.

Quiz Completion

The student has successfully submitted the quiz and it is no longer in progress. The quiz attempt is listed for the student.
