Overview
Use the Learning Outcomes tool in D2L Brightspace to help you assess students’ learning outcomes and determine if they have acquired the intended knowledge, skills, and abilities from a learning experience. Learning Outcomes help track information about the knowledge, skills and abilities students acquire as they participate in courses or other learning experiences.
Overall, there are four main actions to using Learning Outcomes in D2L Brightspace:
- In your course, add course outcomes and/or add program and institution outcomes from the Learning Outcomes tool page..
- Align outcomes to learning activities in discussions, assignments, quizzes, and rubrics.
- Assess using an outcome in an assignment, discussion, questions in a quiz attempt, and rubrics (in those learning activities).
- Navigate to the Mastery View to review student overall outcome achievement and decide whether to adjust the Mastery View calculation.
Review student outcome achievement from Mastery View in Grades
In Grades, instructors have access to the Mastery View. You can review student outcome achievement for specific outcomes, including checking evidence for each outcome and leaving overall feedback for the outcome assessment.
Navigate to the Mastery View
- Navigate to Grades tool.
- In the Grades page, select the Mastery View tab.

- The Mastery View displays with the student's overall achievement for a specific outcome.

Mastery View is like a spreadsheet
Before navigating to a student's overall outcome achievement, let's learn more about the Mastery View. The Mastery View is like a spreadsheet with a view of:
Why are some learning outcomes missing in the Mastery View?
Not all learning outcomes added to your course will display in the Mastery View. The Mastery View only displays learning outcomes aligned to Brightspace learning activities (Assignment folders, Discussions topics, questions/sections/pools in Quizzes) and Rubrics (with multiple criterion) attached to those Brightspace learning activities.
Adjust the Mastery View Calculation
From the Mastery View Settings link, instructors can change the calculation type for your outcome assessment. These calculation methods are available to select from:
- No automatic calculation
- Most Common (selected by default)
- Most Recent
- Highest
- Decaying Average
To learn more about the selected calculation method, select the "calculation example" link on the page for sample calculations.
Note: If an overall evaluation has not yet been published to the student, then that assessment evaluation is not included in the calculation for the suggested overall level of achievement and it does not appear in the evidence trend line of evidence history of assessments related to an outcome.
Review a student's outcome evaluation
- Navigate to the Mastery View.
- For a student, select the outcome level or dash (-) link under an outcome.

- On the student's Overall Achievement screen for that outcome, review the trend data, overall achievement, and evidence data in the left panel.
- In the right panel, decide whether to manually override the overall achievement, and whether to leave overall achievement feedback for the outcome. If you make changes to either, select Save Draft or Publish.

Review learning outcomes progress from Class Progress
In Class Progress, instructors and students have access to the individual student’s progress toward Learning Outcomes in the class. A student can review their own individual progress, including the trend and evidence for each outcome. Learn more about the student's view of the Class Progress tool.
- Navigate to Class Progress from the Other Tools course navigation bar menu.
- Select the Learning Outcomes page in the left-hand panel.
- Outcomes are listed, including whether the student has been assessed against them.
- Select on an outcome to review the progress.

- Review the trend data and evidence data.
Note that evidence is only accessible to the student if that item is still accessible to them.
