Options for Self Assessments in Brightspace

Self-assessments (SA) are useful for private student reflection with ungraded questions. But Quizzes can provide a more flexible and valuable experience for most practice and formative assessment scenarios. With Quizzes, instructors can also view student responses, access question statistics, use release conditions, and create low-stakes experiences using options (such as hidden point values or zero-point questions).

Since the Self Assessment tool in Brightspace will no longer be available, we have two options for moving the questions currently stored in a Self Assessment: 

• Option 1 - Move (i.e. import) the Self Assessment questions into the Question Library and use them to create an ungraded quiz. 
• Option 2 - Move (i.e. import) the Self Assessment questions directly into an existing Quiz. 

 

Option 1: Move (i.e. import) the Self Assessment questions into the Question Library and use them to create an ungraded Quiz

Do you use the Question Library to store and manage your questions in your course? You can move (i.e. import) the questions from your Self Assessment in to the Question Library and them add them to a new ungraded Quiz. 

Step 1 - Import the questions to the Question Library

1. Navigate to Quizzes.
2. From the tool navigation, select Question Library.
   Note: In the Question Library, you can organize the imported questions into a section (Create New > Section > add a Title > Save) if you want to keep the self assessment questions organized like folders.
3. In the Question Library, select Import and then select Browse Existing Questions.
4. On the next screen, select the self-assessment from the Source menu that contains the questions you want to add to the Question Library.
5. Select the top check box to the number of items to select all questions from the self assessment.
6. Select Import. The selected questions are added to the Question Library.
7. Select Done Editing Questions.

Step 2 - Create the ungraded quiz

1. Navigate to Quizzes.
2. Select New Quiz to create a new quiz.
3. Provide a Title for the quiz. 
4. To keep the Self Assessment questions ungraded, ensure the quiz lists zero points and set to Not in Grade Book.

Step 3 - Add the questions to the quiz

1. On the quiz editing page, select Add Existing and then select Browse Question Library.
2. On the next screen, the Question Library questions and sections display by default as the Source.
3. Select the check box next to each self assessment question (or the entire section of questions) you want to add to the quiz.  
4. Select Import. The selected questions are added to the quiz.

Step 4 - Adjust and hide question points values

1. Under the Questions section, select the check box next to each question that you don't want point values associated with.
2. Select More Actions > Set points.
3. Enter zero points for each question and select Save. 
4. Then, expand the Timing & Display section.
5. Select Allow Hints to allow a student to view the hint for each question (i.e. the 'view hint for question <number' link).
6. Select Hide question point values check box so the question's zero points do not display to students after they complete their attempt. 

Step 5 - Finish editing and saving the quiz

1. On the quiz page, toggle the Hidden toggle to Visible.
2. When you have finished editing and reviewing the quiz questions, select Save and Close. 

 

Option 2: Move (i.e. import) the Self Assessment questions directly into an existing Quiz

Step 1 - Add the questions to an existing quiz

1. Navigate to Quizzes.
2. Open an existing quiz or create a new quiz.
3. On the quiz editing page, select Add Existing and then select Browse Question Library.
4. On the next screen, select the self-assessment from the Source menu that contains the questions you want to add to the Quiz.
5. Select the check box next to each question you want to import.
6. Select Import. The selected questions are added to the quiz.
