Importing the Grade book
Instructors can enter grades in another application and import them into D2L Brightspace using a CSV or TXT file. You can also create new grade items through an import file by adding a column to the file. The import file must follow a standard format.
Create import CSV or text file
The import file must include three columns in order to import the file into the gradebook:
- OrgDefinedId or Username
You must provide a Username or Org Defined ID (or both).
- <Grade item name> Points Grade
This is the name of the grade item (e.g. Quiz 5 or Midterm) followed by Points Grade, Grade Symbol, or Text Grade.
Note: These grade item column(s) have numerical, symbols, or text in the cells.
- End-of-Line Indicator
This column has a pound/hash # symbol that indicates each row contains data.

Import the file
- On the Enter Grades page, click Import.
- On the Import Grades page, click Browse.
- Locate the file you want to import and click Open.
- Click Continue.
- On the Step 2 screen, view error and warning messages associated with the import, and click Continue.
Note: If you get an error message, the file will need to be edited. You may get a message that the there is an "Unrecognized users" error.
- On the Step 3 screen, preview your import.
- Even if a message displays "No items found", click Import.
Export grade items to a csv or Excel file
- On the Enter Grades page, click Export.
- Select All users from the Export Grade Items For drop-down list, as well as the Key Field you want to use to identify users.
- Select the Grade Values and User Details you want to export.
- Select the Grade Items you want to export.
- Click Export to CSV or Export to Excel.
- A pop-up window will appear.
- Click Download after the export is complete.
- Open the file on your device.
