What is D2L Brightspace Pulse App?

D2L Brightspace Pulse is a free mobile app (iOS and Android devices) that can help students stay connected and on track with their courses in D2L Brightspace.  It tracks due dates for all current courses in one app.  It provides one easy view of course calendars, readings, assignments, evaluations, grades, and announcements.  The schedule view and weekly visualization provides students with a quick, at-a-glance view of what is due today, this week, and later in the term across all their courses. Brightspace Pulse loads student course data by retrieving calendar events from Calendar. These events might include dates from Content, Checklist, Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes in D2L Brightspace, only if your instructor sets dates for the items in D2L Brightspace.

D2L Brightspace Pulse is available for download from any global Google Play™ store or the Apple App Store®.  The app is generally released at the beginning of the month, and then sometimes mid-month, if issues are found. Depending on how your device is configured, the app may update automatically or you may have to manually check for new versions.

Log in to Brightspace Pulse

  1. On your device, open the Brightspace Pulse icon.
  2. Tap Pick Your School.
  3. You can quickly find your school by typing the name of the Minnesota State institution.

  4. On your school’s Brightspace login page, tap Sign on with StarID.
  5. Enter your D2L Brightspace login credentials, and then tap Sign On

Courses tab

The Courses tab lists classes that you are enrolled in. 

  1. Tap the Courses tab. A list of enrolled courses displays.
  2. Tap a course.
  3. From the table of contents, tap a content module.
  4. Tap a content topic to view it.

Notifications dot

Note: After logging in for the first time, course updates do not appear for items your instructor has already updated in the D2L Brightspace class. Only newly updated items after you’ve logged in to the Pulse app will appear as notifications. If there is at least one notification for any of the accounts you’re signed into, a red notification dot displays on the logo in the navigation menu.

Only specific course events are sent to the Brightspace Pulse app, only if your instructors set dates for these items:

  • Assignment due date
  • Checklist due date in the calendar
  • Content due date
  • Discussion availability dates
  • Quiz end date in the calendar
  • Survey end date in the calendar

These updates show up in the Updates/Notifications tab in the Brightspace Pulse. To view updates, tap the Notifications tab. 

Discussions from the Brightspace Pulse app

You can read and reply to discussion threads in the Notifications tab. In the D2L Brightspace class, you must first subscribe to a discussion topic or thread for a course offering you are enrolled in. You will receive notifications in the Pulse app for any discussion you're subscribed to in a D2L Brightspace class.

Read and reply to discussions

  1. Tap the Notifications tab. A red dot displays on the Subscriptions sub-tab.
  2. Tap the Subscriptions sub-tab. A list of discussion threads displays. The list is sorted with the discussion threads that have the most recent activity at the top, and any discussion threads that have new activity since you last checked are highlighted to indicate an unread state.
  3. Tap the thread containing the activity. A list of posts displays.
  4. Reply to the thread.
    Note: Unlike in D2L Brightspace, you can only reply to the original post, not a specific reply post in the discussion thread.
