Overview

The Manage Files tool is a file management location for your course. You can use this tool to organize and upload files associates with your course. We recommend that you organize your files into folders, such as a folder for each module of content. Manage Files enables you to select and upload a file from your computer in to your D2L Brightspace course. You can upload most file types.

Note: On the Manage Files page, files and folders are displayed under the corresponding columns: Name, Size, Type, and Last Modified Date.  The  Link icon beside a file name indicates that the file is currently in use as a Content topic.

Upload Files

  1. Navigate to the Manage Files tool from the Course Admin page.
  2. Navigate to the folder in which you want to upload files to.
  3. Click Upload.
  4. Click Upload to locate the file that you want to upload.
  5. Navigate to and select the file from your device.
  6. After the file has successfully uploaded to the window, click Save.

Optional 'Overwrite' Action

If the Manage Files page already contains the same file, you will be prompted if you want to overwrite the existing file.

  1. If you want to overwrite (i.e. replace) the existing file, select the checkbox next to the file, and then click Overwrite.
  2. If you want two copies of the same file, do not select any checkboxes and simply click Overwrite.

  3. Click the Cut icon in the action bar.
  4. Navigate to the folder where you want to place the content.

Delete a file or folder

Important: Please use extreme caution when deleting files and folders if they are referenced to items in the Content tool or quicklinks in any HTML Editor (e.g. Quizzes, Discussions, Announcements, etc.).  Deleting a file or a folder containing files that are currently referenced in a different tool will result in a broken link!

  1. Navigate to the Manage Files tool from the Course Admin page.
  2. Select the checkbox beside the file or folder that you want to delete.
  3. Click the Delete icon in the action bar.
  4. In the confirmation message, click Yes.

Tips and Troubleshooting for Uploading Files

The maximum file size that can be uploaded in D2L Brightspace is 2GB per file.  You can upload multiple files at one time up to 2 GB. For 2 GB or larger files, the file may begin to upload but stop at a percentage (e.g. 50% or even 100%). If the file upload timeouts, you may get an "Oops - File could not be uploaded" message in the Add a File window. If it's a media file, use MediaSpace to store the file and insert it into the HTML Editor (such as in an announcement).
