Coming Summer 2026: New Content Experience for Students in D2L Brightspace

Summary

What is the new experience in Content? What features have changed for students when using the New Content Experience in D2L Brightspace?

Body

Overview

Starting with summer 2026 courses, students will have the New Content Experience in their courses. Note that this change does not affect your spring 2026 courses, which will continue to have the "Classic" Content experience

With the New Content Experience in Content, students can expect new features and some changes to their experience with navigation and interacting with Content.

What is "Classic" Content vs. New Content Experience

The New Content Experience offers a clean, minimalist design for students navigating and interacting the materials. The New Content Experience is the new experience compared to “Classic Content”, the previous experience in the Content tool.

What features are not available in the New Content Experience

D2L has been slowly building out the New Content Experience over many years (10+ years). D2L is still working on adding more functionality that currently exists in the Classic Content to make it more feasible for higher education users.

The following features and functionality are available in the Classic Content, but are not available in the New Content Experience. Note: This list may be updated as features become available in future monthly releases of D2L Brightspace.

Student features not available in the New Content Experience

  • No Course Schedule page to view upcoming due dates on content
  • No option to bookmark a topic page to easily return to it at a later time
  • No topic indicator icon for unviewed topics
  • Cannot search within a PDF document using a search field
  • No option to add a content item to ePortfolio
  • No easy print button for an individual topic (such as web pages, template page) when it does not load in the content viewer
  • No print button from the Table of Contents to print all content as a list
  • Cannot download all content button from the Table of Contents list (Note that content can still be downloaded from each module)

Commonly asked questions

How do I mark a content topic as complete?

Once a topic has been selected in the left-navigation Table of Contents panel, the topic loads in the right panel. A "completed" tag displays for the topic that is a file document or HTML page.

In some cases, you may need to complete the assignment (submit to an assignment, post to a discussion, take a quiz, etc.) to get a different tag to display for that topic.

For an overview, check out the navigate and interact with content in the New Content Experience video in MediaSpace.

How do I download the file for a topic?

When viewing a topic, select the Download icon above the topic to download the file to your device.

Note that the download icon in the document toolbar will download a PDF version of the same document.

Feature Comparison: Classic vs. New Content Experience

In the New Content Experience, students can still do most of what they were doing in the Classic Content. However, a few things have shifted around for students. Here is a list of things that have changed to help you find your way:
