Summary

How do I add a link, image, or media in the HTML editor? What is the accessibility checker?

Overview

The HTML Editor is available across numerous tools in your D2L Brightspace course.  The HTML Editor enables you to create HTML formatted content.  For example, the HTML Editor is available when you post to a discussion topic, create comments for assignments, and more.

The HTML Editor toolbar is available for most text entry fields to add rich-text content.  Some text entry fields may be limited to plain text only, such as specific quiz question types including, but not limited to: fill-in-the-blank and arithmetic questions.

Copy and paste content into the HTML Editor

You can copy and paste unformatted content into the HTML Editor.  If you have already composed your content as text in another application (such as a word processor), you can use the Remove Formatting option to paste formatted content as plain text, or Keep Formatting to keep the source formatting (to the best of the system’s abilities).

Add a Quicklink

The Insert Quicklink option is available wherever the HTML Editor is present. You can insert a quicklink to a URL.

  1. Place your cursor where you want the quicklink to appear in your content.
  2. Click the Insert Quicklink icon.
  3. Enter the web site address into the URL field.
  4. Enter the Title of the link.
  5. Select whether you want the linked item to open in the Whole Window (keeping elements such as navbars present when a user is viewing the quicklink), the Same Frame (opens in the content pane), or a New Window.
  6. Click Insert.

Add an Image

The Insert Image option to add an image is available wherever the HTML Editor is present.

Add an image from your device

  1. Place your cursor where you want the image to appear in your content.
  2. Click the Insert Image icon.
  3. Click the My Computer option.
  4. Click Upload to select an image from your files, or drag-and-drop the file into the dotted box.
  5. Navigate to the image file on your device and select it.
  6. After the file has been uploaded to the Add a File window, click Add.
  7. Enter alternative text to describe your image, or select the This image is decorative checkbox.
  8. Click Ok.

Copy and paste an image from an external site/program

Note: If you get the message, “Local image paste has been disabled. Local images have been removed from pasted content” when pasting the image into the question, please save the image to your device, and then upload the image from your device into the HTML Editor using the process above.

Edit Image Properties

Within the HTML Editor, we have the option to edit an image inline using Edit Image options.  You can edit images that you have uploaded from your device, added from the course files, or pasted from an external program.

Accessibility Checker

The accessibility checker icon is available in the HTML Editor.  After you add content to the HTML Editor, you can click the checker to ensure that the HTML page conforms to WCAG and Section 508 accessibility standards. The checker indicates if the content is free of accessibility issues, or offers suggestions to fix them. Note that the accessibility checker does not check multiple files at the same time.
