Overview
If an assignment is an extra credit assignment or bonus assignment, you can create a bonus grade item. If an assignment is marked as Bonus, it means students who do the assignment receive the extra credit, and those who do not complete the assignment are not penalized.
Notes:
- Bonus grade items can only be created from Numeric, Selectbox, or Pass/Fail grade items.
- Bonus grade items are not counted towards the maximum points for a category or final grade.
Create a bonus grade item
- When creating a grade item, select the Bonus checkbox to allow students' scores in the grade item to count as bonus.

- On the Manage Grades page, the bonus grade item will have a yellow star icon next to it to signify it is a bonus item. Note: On the Enter Grades page, this star icon does not display.

What is the difference between "Can Exceed" and "Bonus" in a Grade Item?
Can Exceed option - an individual student's points can go over whatever value you set for the grade item.
- If one student exceeds the grade item's points, only that individual student receives the extra points toward the final grade. For example, one student receives 11/10 points, while all other students only receive 10/10 points.
Bonus option - all points are extra points added on top students' final grades.
- If a grade item is marked as Bonus, all students who complete the assignment receive the extra credit toward their final grade. For example, one student receives 230/220 points, another student receives 225/220, and another student receives 220/220.
Why isn't the bonus item counting toward the Final Grade?
Bonus grade items do not count toward the final grade. The bonus grade item's points or weight are added on top of the final grade.
For a Weighted gradebook, the Bonus grade item and category Weight must be higher than 0%
If the bonus grade item and/or category Weight is set to 0%, then the grade item contributes 0% (i.e. no points) on top of the final grade. The bonus grade item and its category (if applicable) must have a Weight higher than 0% to add points on top of the final grade.
