Accessibility+: Accessibility Report

Accessibility+, a tool within D2L Brightspace, supports inclusive and accessible course design. The Accessibility+ tool is available to all Minnesota State D2L Brightspace users at no extra cost to you.

The Accessibility+ Accessibility Report provides a high-level summary of accessibility scan performed on course files within D2L Brightspace. It identifies compliance issues aligned with WCAG success criteria and offers targeted fixes and recommendations for remediation. This report view integrates AutoFix and Remediation Services to support both automated and guided resolution of accessibility barriers.

This document explains how to navigate the report, understand the findings, and take corrective actions to ensure all course materials are accessible to every learner.

Who Is This Guide for?

This guide is intended for instructors to review and improve the accessibility of course content. It provides step-by-step instructions for using the Accessibility+ Accessibility Report, leveraging AutoFix and Remediation Services, and taking the appropriate actions based on the findings.

How to Access the Accessibility Report

  1. Once a course resource is opened, an Accessibility+ icon will appear above the resource.
    Note: the icon and its color will vary based on if and how many accessibility issues are found in the resource.
  2. Click the Accessibility icon to open the Accessibility+ drawer from the right containing the Accessibility Report and Alternate Format modules.

File Details

The top of the Accessibility+ drawer will show the details of the resource, including:

  1. File name: Shows the file name as it is stored in D2L Brightspace
  2. File details: Shows file metadata such as title, author, page count, and size
  3. Download icon: Allows you to download the resource if you would like to review the file offline
  4. Replace option: Allows you to replace the file in D2L Brightspace with a remediated version

Accessibility Report

The Accessibility Report tab on the dashboard features a summary of key findings from the accessibility audit of the selected resource.

The summary includes Scores, Checks, Passed, Failed, and Manual details.

The Score is visual representation of the file’s overall accessibility. The score is based on the number of failed success criteria, issue occurrences, and WCAG compliance levels.

Check represent The total number of accessibility criteria evaluated, which varies depending on file type (e.g., DOCX, PPTX, and PDF).

  • Passed: The number of success criteria that are met with the total checks. These checks require no further action.
  • Failed: Displays the number of success criteria that the file did not meet during the evaluation. These are issues that need to be addressed to improve accessibility.
  • Manual: The number of criteria that require manual review. These issues cannot be automatically validated and should be reviewed and resolved manually.

Checks and Accessibility Details

Each evaluated check appears at the bottom of the report. Click “Expand to view details” to see a full breakdown of the issues.

For each check, you will see details on Compliance Level, WCAG Version, Reference Numbers, Explanations, and Occurrences.

The Compliance Level is either A, AA, or AAA, the WCAG Version will also be listed (e.g., 2.2).

Also included will be the following:

  • Reference number for specific guidelines
  • Brief explanation of the issue
  • Number of times and the location of the issue appears within the file

Accessibility Remediation Options

Accessibility+ provides two powerful remediation features to help address accessibility issues identified in course files:

Option to autofix issues

AutoFix

AutoFix applies predefined fixes to common accessibility issues automatically.

 
  1. When you click AutoFix button, the system shows how many issues are fixed and provides an option to Apply Changes.

  2. Click Apply Changes to finalize the fixes. A confirmation message will appear once complete.

Remediation Services

For more complex issues that require expert assistance, ansrAccess offers complete assistance in fixing accessibility issues.

Option for availaling help for remediating manually.

Click “Fix it for me” to submit a remediation request. This request will be routed for review based on your institution’s workflow.

Request sent to admin in the institution

Once approved, the content will be sent to the accessibility team for manual remediation.

Together, these features support a comprehensive and efficient approach to achieving full accessibility across content.
