Reopen a student's submitted quiz attempt

Overview

Starting with the July 2025 release, instructors can reopen a submitted quiz attempt in Quizzes, allowing students to resume from where they left off. The feature supports scenarios where students run out of time or pass the quiz end date, reducing frustration from auto-submissions and improving overall quiz management flexibility.​ This feature introduces the ability to return quiz attempts to an unsubmitted state and adjust time limits if needed.​

Reopen a student's submitted quiz attempt

To reopen a student's quiz attempt, follow these steps. 

  1. Navigate to the Quizzes tool. 
  2. Select Grade from the quiz's menu. 
  3. Find the student or students with submitted attempt in the list. 
  4. Select the attempt and select Reopen. 
    Reopen a quiz attempt from Grade Quiz page by selecting an attempt and clicking Reopen​.
  5. If prompted that the quiz is in the past, enter a New End Date and select Continue. 
  6. If applicable, review the student's Total Time Remaining. Otherwise, the student's attempt will list the time limit has expired. 
  7. Optional: Enter or adjust Extra Time in minutes to allow for the student's attempt. 
  8. When ready, select Reopen Attempt.
    Decide whether to add extra time before reopening the attempt(s).
  9. The attempt(s) will be listed as "reopened" on the Grade Quiz page. 
    After reopening the quiz attempt, its status is listed as Reopened​

Reopen multiple student submitted quiz attempts at one time

To reopen more than one student quiz attempts at one time, follow these steps. 

  1. Navigate to the Quizzes tool. 
  2. Select Grade from the quiz's menu. 
  3. Find the students with submitted attempt(s) in the list. 
  4. Select all the attempts and select Reopen. 
    Reopen a quiz attempt from Grade Quiz page by selecting an attempt and clicking Reopen​.
  5. If prompted that the quiz is in the past, enter a New End Date to apply to the selected attempts and select Continue. 
    If the end date for this quiz is in the past, an instructor can set a new end date.
  6. If applicable, review each student's Total Time Remaining.  Otherwise, the student's attempt will list the time limit has expired. 
  7. Optional: Enter or adjust Extra Time in minutes to allow for all the selected attempts. 
  8. When ready, select Reopen Attempt.
    Decide whether to add extra time before reopening the attempt(s).
  9. The attempts will be listed as "reopened" on the Grade Quiz page. 
    After reopening the quiz attempt, its status is listed as Reopened​

Student View

When a student navigates back to the quiz page, the quiz will list that "when you re-enter the quiz, the timer will resume counting down" and the student can select Continue Quiz button to continue their attempt. 

After the quiz attempt is reopened, the student can select Continue Quiz to continue where they left off​.
