Science Interactive Hands On Labs (HOL)

Overview

Hands on Labs (HOL) allows for an instructor to use the shared External Learning Tool link or create a course-specific External Learning Tool link to Hands on Labs.

Instructions for Use

Single-Sign On Access

The following steps allow you to add the pre-configured integration to allow Single Sign-On (SSO) access to the Hands on Labs platform.  This allows your students access to the HOL platform, but does not allow grade synchronization.

1. Navigate to the Brightspace Content tool.
2. Click on Existing Activities > External Learning Tools.
3. Click Hands On Labs (HOL).

Create a Lesson Link

The following steps link directly to a HOL lesson, allowing for grade return to the D2L Brightspace gradebook.

1. Navigate to your HOL class.
2. Within the menu, click Settings.
   
3. Click Show LTI Credentials.
   
4. Find the lesson.  Copy the lesson hook.
   
5. Navigate to Course Admin > External Learning Tools within your D2L Brightspace course.
6. Click New Link.
7. Enter a Title.
8. Paste the following into the URL field: https://myhol.holscience.com/plugin/lti
   
9. Scroll down the page and click Use tool provider security settings.
   
10. Click Add custom parameters.
11. Click Save.
12. Enter the following into the Name field: lesson_hook
    
13. Paste the lesson hook from above into the Value field.  Remove ‘lesson_hook=’ so the value starts with ‘hol-‘.
14. Click Save and Close.
15. Within the Content tool, click Existing Activities > External Learning Tools.
16. Select the External Learning Tool link created above.

Grade Synchronization

Upon successful completion of a HOL activity, grades will be synced to the D2L Brightspace grade book.
