Supported browsers in D2L Brightspace

Overview

For an optimal experience that offers better performance, accessibility, and security, D2L strongly recommends using one of the supported browsers with D2L Brightspace. Supported browsers are the latest stable version or most up-to-date browser version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. When possible, please make sure the browser is updated to the latest version. Some D2L Brightspace tools, features, and functions perform better using the most up-to-date web or mobile browser.

To share which browser version and operating system version you are using, you can use a google search (such as whatsmybrowser.org). Send the browser and OS version details with your campus IT staff to help with troubleshooting the issue.

If you encounter any issues within D2L Brightspace using a supported browser version, please let us know!  You may reach us – the Minnesota State Learning Technologies team – by submitting a request.

Retro and Legacy Browsers

When using D2L Brightspace, it’s recommended to use the most up-to-date version of the web or mobile browser. While you can access D2L Brightspace with retro or legacy browsers (specific older versions of supported browsers), D2L does not test fix software defects experienced in these browser version. This means you may encounter unexpected user interface behavior and appearance, or broken and unsupported functionality.

If you attempt to connect to D2L Brightspace with an unsupported browser, D2L Brightspace browser version check displays a retro or legacy browser warning message. A pop-up message appears directing you to update your browser, change to a supported browser, or dismiss the message.

Retro Browsers

Users with a slightly out of date browser will receive a gentle message indicating, “Your browser is looking a little retro” encouraging them to upgrade their browser. Users of retro browsers are still able to login and use D2L Brightspace.

Legacy Browsers

Users with very old browsers will receive strong messaging of “Sorry, but browser name is no longer supported” indicating that not all parts of Brightspace may work with their browser, and that they must upgrade their browser in order to use all parts of Brightspace. Users of legacy browsers are still able to login and use D2L Brightspace.

Unsupported (blocked) Browsers

Unsupported or blocked browsers are browsers that are explicitly blocked by D2L Brightspace, due to extremely low usage, potential security vulnerabilities, or performance issues. D2L does not provide technical support for unsupported browsers.

If a user attempts to connect to D2L Brightspace with an unsupported browser, an error message displays, preventing them from logging in. Currently, this list includes all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy, and very old versions of other browsers.
