The process individuals use to sign in to D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura is changing on Saturday, August 9, 2025.  Rather than entering your StarID (ab1234cd) to sign in, you will now be prompted to enter your Microsoft 365 account — StarID@go.minnstate.edu (example - ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu) for students or StarID@minnstate.edu (example - ab1234cd@minnstate.edu) for employees.

Q:  Why is the sign in process changing for D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace?

A:  Using Microsoft 365 (Entra ID) as our sign in system will enhance your account security by leveraging multi-factor authentication (MFA).  Additionally, you'll be able to use single sign-on (SSO) to seamlessly navigate between services using the same sign in process including Microsoft 365, D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSapce without re-entering your user name and password.  (Note:  Individuals accessing Workday are still required to perform multi-factor authentication at each sign in attempt.)

Q: What is changing?

A:  For you to sign in successfully to D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace, staff from Minnesota State will need to change the username for each of your accounts in these services from StarID to StarID@minnstate.edu (employees) and StarID@go.minnstate.edu (students). 

Q:  Can I change the username of these accounts on my own?

No, you are unable to change your username in these services yourself.  Beginning Saturday, August 9 at 5:00PM CDT, staff from Minnesota State will work with representatives from each service provider to rename the more than 400,000 accounts that exist between each of these three services. 

Q:  When will I be able to sign in to D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace using my Microsoft 365 account?

Until the username for your account has been updated in each service, you will be unable to sign in to these services using your Microsoft 365 account.  We expect to finish updating usernames for all accounts by Sunday, August 10 at 5:00AM CDT. 

Listed below are details for some additional activities that will take place between Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10. 

  • Friday, August 8, 2025 - Account and enrollment creation/updates for D2L Brightspace will be paused; no account or enrollment changes will occur in Brightspace.
  • Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 5:00 PM CDT
    • Staff will begin changing usernames for accounts in D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace from StarID to the following
      • Students: StarID@go.minnstate.edu
      • Employees: StarID@minnstate.edu
    • D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace will present users with a new prompt to sign in using a Microsoft 365 account.
  • Sunday, August 10, 2025 at 5:00 AM CDT - All usernames for accounts in D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace should be updated.
  • Monday, August 11, 2025 -  Account and enrollment creation/updates for D2L Brightspace will be resume; account or enrollment changes will occur in Brightspace.

Q: What username will I use to sign in?

A: Students will sign in using StarID@go.minnstate.edu (e.g. ab1234cd@go.minnstate.edu) and employees will use StarID@minnstate.edu (e.g. ab1234cd@minnstate.edu).  These are the same credentials you use to sign in to Microsoft 365 online.

Q:  Are there additional data fields changing in D2L Brightspace, Zoom, and Kaltura MediaSpace?

A:  The following data fields will also change in each service.  If you reference these fields in another service or integration these will need to be updated.

  • D2L Brightspace
    • Usernames will be updated to your Microsoft 365 (Entra ID) username. 
      • Students: StarID@go.minnstate.edu
      • Employees: StarID@minnstate.edu
    • Employee TechID's will be updated to include a '.e'.  For example: 0123457 will become 01234567.e
  • Zoom
    • Email addresses will match the address used as your primary Microsoft 365 email address.
    • Zoom maintains a data field titled, cms_user_id, which it uses to associate Zoom recordings with your Kaltura account.  cms_user_id will change from StarID to StarID@minnstate.edu or StarID@go.minnstate.edu
  • Kaltura Mediaspace
    • Usernames will be will be updated from StarID to your Microsoft 365 (Entra ID) username. 
    • Email addresses will match the address used as your primary Microsoft 365 email address.

Q:  I have a student AND an employee account (dual accounts) in Microsoft 365, which do I use to sign in?

A:  There are over 10,000 individuals across Minnesota State who have a two Microsoft 365 accounts.  One as a student (StarID@go.minnstate.edu) and another as an employee (StarID@minnstate.edu). For example Jane Smith is employed as a staff member at Hennepin Technical College and also enrolled as a student in credit courses North Hennepin Community College.  Jane will have two accounts with each service (D2L Brightspace, Zoom, Kaltura MediaSpace).  Any content created before the August 9, 2025 will be transferred to and associated with your employee account, including:

Q:  My campus uses Zoom Phone and I use a Zoom Phone number for multi-factor authentication requests.  Will I still be able to use this phone number?

A:   If you are not signed in to Zoom Phone, you might not receive the phone call or text message required to verify your identity.  To avoid this, users should set up an alternate phone number that is in addition to/different from your Zoom Phone number before August 9.

Q:  I am unsure which multi-factor authentication methods I set for my Microsoft 365 account?

A:  Review, change, or add to your verification methods

  • Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator – Sign in with your face, fingerprint, PIN
  • Security Key – Sign in using a USB, Bluetooth, or NFC device.
  • Microsoft Authenticator – Approve sign-in requests or use one-time codes.
  • Hardware Token (This requires assistance from your campus technology staff) - Sign in with a code provided through a hardware token.
    • Generates a 6-digit code every 30 seconds.
    • Doesn’t require a phone or app.
    • Ideal for users without smartphones or who prefer not to use personal devices.

Q:  I need to setup multi-factor authentication (MFA) on my account.  How do I get started?

A:  Review the setup MFA information document.

Q:  What should I do if I am unable to sign in to D2L Brightspace, Zoom, or Kaltura MediaSpace?

A:   Contact your technology help at your campus or contact the Minnesota State Service Portal.

Q:  The email address listed for my account in Zoom and Kaltura is not correct.  How do I change this?

A:  Zoom and Kaltura use the primary email address associated with your Microsoft 365 account.  If you have email addresses from multiple institutions, you can set your default primary email address.
