Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your Microsoft 365 account. This article explains what MFA is and why it’s required, and provides links to enrollment instructions, preference updates, and frequently asked questions. Additional details, including first‑time setup steps and recommendations for staying safe online, are available in the MFA Guide located in the Attachments section at the bottom right of this page.
What MFA Is
Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security method that requires you to verify your identity using more than just your password. After entering your StarID credentials, you confirm your sign‑in using a second factor, such as a mobile app notification, text message, or phone call. This protects your account even if your password is compromised.
MFA works by combining two or more of the following authentication factors:
- Something you know — your StarID username and password
- Something you have — a trusted device, such as your mobile phone or authenticator app
- Something you are — biometric verification, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition
Why MFA is Required
MFA is required for all System Office employees to safeguard access to Microsoft 365 and other enterprise services. It helps prevent unauthorized access, protects sensitive data, and supports system‑wide security standards.
First-Time Set Up (Enrollment in MFA)
Step‑by‑step enrollment instructions are provided in the MFA Guide (available in the Attachments section at the bottom right of this page). The guide includes:
