Overview

A rubric can be associated with and scored from items in different assessment tools, such as Assignments, Discussions, Grades, and written response questions in Quizzes. Check out this evaluating using rubrics to enhance communication with students video in MediaSpace to learn more.

Score using a rubric

From your course navigation bar, navigate to tool where the activity or assessment is located, such as Assignments, Discussions, Grades, or Quizzes.

  • For Assignments, Discussions, and Quizzes, navigate to the evaluation page for the student. Score the rubric by selecting levels for each criterion. Select Published to make the rubric assessment available to the student.
  • For Grades, select Enter Grades from the item's menu. Under the Assessment column, select the rubric icon to open the rubric. Score the rubric by selecting levels for each criterion and select Save in the pop-up window. Select Save on the grade item page to make the rubric assessment available to the student.

What happens if I remove a rubric from an assessment item?

When can I remove a rubric from an assessment item?

A rubric becomes linked when it is connected to learning activity or assessment item. For example, if the rubric is connected to an assignment folder but you have not graded any submissions with the rubric. In this case, you may remove the rubric to unlink it from the learning activity or assessment item.

When should I not remove the rubric from an assessment item?

A rubric becomes locked when it is connected to an activity or assessment item and has been used to assess at least one student. If you remove the rubric from the page, a warning message appears: "Deleting rubrics could result in loss of data!"

The 'Deleting rubrics could result in loss of data!" message when deleting a rubric from the Discussion Topic's Assessment tab.

When a rubric has been used to assess student work, removing the rubric from the item will delete the scored rubric assessments. The rubric assessment no longer displays when entering grades and the rubric assessment is removed from the student’s view. Even if the rubric were later re-connected to the activity, the unscored rubric would be available, but the previous scored rubric assessment have been lost. This deleted rubric assessment cannot be restored by D2L!
