Requesting Local Administrator Rights on System Office Computing Devices

What Local Administrator Access Is

Local administrator access enables users to make system‑level changes including installing software, modifying system settings, and perform advanced configuration tasks on their assigned workstation. Because this access increases security risk, it is granted only when a documented business need cannot be met through standard access or support.

Requirements and Responsibilities

By requesting local admin access, employees acknowledge that:

  • Access is limited to their assigned workstation and approved business purpose.
  • Unauthorized, unlicensed, or non‑business software may not be installed.
  • Elevated privileges must be used only when required—not for routine work.
  • They are responsible for protecting the workstation and institutional data.
  • ITS may rebuild the device if needed; local data and non‑enterprise applications may not be restored.
  • Safeguards may be required, and access may be restricted or removed if risk changes.

How to Request Local Administrator Access

  1. Download and complete the Local Administrator Access Request Form (available in the Attachments section at the bottom right of this page).
  2. Provide a clear business justification.
  3. Obtain required signatures from both the employee and supervisor.
  4. Submit a service request through the Minnesota State Service Portal using the "Software, Applications & Licensing" service and attach the completed form.
  5. Review begins once all required information and approvals are received.
